English Department

Welcome to English

At Outwood Academy Foxhills, we strive to embed the skills students need to ensure they fulfil their potential throughout their secondary education. Students will access a range of texts from plays to poetry. This enriches their knowledge of different writing styles and helps to develop a love of reading. A specific focus is placed on written accuracy which further develops the writing skills needed for the final exams they will sit. The staff run weekly enrichment sessions to support students who wish to consolidate the learning that takes place in the core lessons.

Key Stage 3

The English course at Key Stage 3 provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to access the WJEC Eduqas GCSE 9-1 English Language and Literature courses in Key Stage 4.

In Year 7 students are introduced to different aspects of literature to encourage them to become analytical and critical of individual texts. They will begin to understand the context of a text and the influences of the writers. A sustained focus on reading and writing will help develop the skills required for examinations in Year 11.

Year 8 follows a similar pattern to consolidate what they have already learnt and develop their writing and reading further through studying a range of texts for both Literature and Language. Opportunities to give presentations and speeches to their class will allow them to work towards the requirements of the GCSE Speaking and Listening component. All Year 7 and 8 students will engage in the Accelerated Reader programme to expand their reading and again increase awareness of different texts.
